This begs the question: if we’re vigilant about keeping ourselves clean, why are we so lax when it comes to practicing good password hygiene? No, your health probably isn’t going to suffer from a terrible password. However, your online privacy and security might.

Password hygiene is the practice of making your account passwords more difficult to guess and harder to crack. It is the set of rules and principles by which you keep yourself safe online. For businesses, this can be particularly important, as poor password hygiene puts a huge target on your back. The following are some tips on how to keep your passwords squeaky-clean.
Tip #1: Start with a strong password.
One of our previous blogs has excellent instructions on how to make a strong password. As a general rule of thumb, passwords should be both long and complex; that is, they should be 12+ characters and include uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and punctuation marks. Don’t use easily guessed information or information that can be easily found through basic internet snooping, such as your birthdate, your pet’s name, your child’s name, your favorite sports team, etc. Take a look at this list of passwords:

Have you ever used any of them? Change it. Right now. These are the top ten most used passwords of 2017, and using one of them is like leaving your front door key in the lock. It’s an invitation to walk right in.
Tip #2: Change your passwords regularly.
Keep counters clean daily. A clean kitchen counter just feels better, and is one of the hallmarks of a clean home. Clear the clutter, and wipe down your counters each day. You can easily do this while you are cooking, or after dinner. Sticking to a cleaning routine. In 2015 Curtis fell pregnant again. But keen to shelter the family from the spotlight, the star decided to hide her baby bump with various suitably placed items while filming Rehab Addict.Curtis later told People, “Having my newborn child’s face plastered all over social media on a Facebook post where someone could cut and paste it and make it a meme, that wasn’t for me.”.

Grab your email anywhere and stay in touch while on the go with email that’s available anywhere on almost any device.
Changing your passwords may sometimes feel like a never-ending cycle, and unfortunately, it nearly is. Currently, it is considered best practice to change your password every 30-45 days, particularly if you’re not using MFA. (Though you should be! See tip #4!) This shortens the amount of time a password is useful to a hacker if they are able to obtain it. It is also a requirement for certain companies that are subject to compliance regulations like PCI DSS. While it may seem like another annoying step, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
Tip #3: Don’t share passwords.
There are a few things under this umbrella. First, don’t share accounts. The more people who have access to a single account, the more chances there are for the account to be misused. If it is misused, you’re going to have a hard time identifying the perpetrator. Second, do not leave your password laying around, such as on a sticky note or piece of notebook paper, where someone else can access it. If someone physically gets into your workspace, they won’t even need to put effort in to get to sensitive data.
Tip #4: Turn on MFA.
Turning on multi-factor authentication (MFA) can be a life saver. You are never 100% safe from cyber-attacks; despite your best efforts, someone may still obtain your password. MFA adds an extra layer of security to protect you in the event that one of your passwords is compromised. We have another blog on what MFA is and why you need it here.
Tip #5: Don’t use the same password for every account.
This is probably the most inconvenient of all the tips. However, it may also be the most important. There will always be breaches. There will always be criminals. There will always be hackers that come up with new ways to get your password. No matter how strong your password is, if you use it on every account you have, you’re making it easy for someone else to completely take over your digital life. If one account gets hacked, all of them get hacked, and you’ll have a hard time recovering from that. Keep your passwords substantially different; if you can’t remember them all, consider using a password manager. For information about helpful programs, scroll to the recommendations in this blog.
Password hygiene is your responsibility. Your IT Administrators can put technical policies in place that require certain password lengths, complexity, and expiration dates, but no one can force a user to come up with a good password.Teach your employees the importance of password hygiene. Without the knowledge they need to make smart password decisions, you’re setting them (and yourself!) up for failure.

Cleaning A Mattress With Mold
Mold is understandably the most concerning stain on this list because it can cause minor health problems and ruin your mattress if you don’t act fast. I am going to go over the cleaning process step-by-step, but first here is a list of important things you will need to remember:
- When you clean mold off a mattress, always make sure to saturate areas around the stain that are not visible. Clean at least two inches or more past the visible stain to stem further growth. This is because
some spores of mold may begin to develop even though you cannot see them. - It is always best to cover your face so the mold does not affect your breathing.
- This guide is only covering topical mold that is visible on the outside of the mattress. If you have mold growth on the inside of the mattress, it may be best to throw it out and replace it. While visible, external mold is easy to pinpoint and clean. Internal mold is much harder and much more dangerous.
Now that we’ve covered important guidelines, let’s get rid of that mold!
- Identify the areas of mold growth.
- Vacuum the surface of the mattress to get rid of any loose, topical mold spores.
- Saturate a cloth in a 1:1 ratio of rubbing alcohol and hot water.
- Clean the visible areas of mold in a circular motion with the cloth, then circle out farther and cover areas past the stain to kill undeveloped spores. Make sure to scrub hard.
- Dip another clean cloth in water and wring it out, then go back over the mattress one more time.
- Take your mattress outside to dry in direct sunlight. The sunlight will kill any remaining mold.
- Make sure the mattress is completely dry, then bring it back inside and it will be good to go!

2. Vacuum your mattress carefully. Ensure that the hose attachment goes over everything including seams, crevices, and indentation. These are the places where bed bugs love to hide.
Once done, empty the bag outdoors and clean the vacuum container to ensure that there are no bed bugs left in the vacuum cleaner.
3. Get a bed bug proof encasement for your mattress and for the box spring, if you have one. These encasements do a great job protecting mattresses because they are made of special materials that will not allow bed bugs through. No bed bug can escape the encasement.
Keep the cover for at least a year, so that you can be sure that whatever bed bugs and eggs are left in the mattress have died. It is important to note that adult bed bugs can survive for months even without food.
4. Another option is to use a steamer to eliminate bed bugs. Steam is very effective in killing bed bugs in all stages of their development if applied correctly. Steam can kill bed bugs on the surface and can also reach into the fabric.
The surface temperature of the area being treated should be at least 160 to 180 degrees F.
